Umpiring - Level 1A
For individuals who have passed ECB ACO Level 1 Umpiring and wish to officiate in a more senior level of league cricket, the ECB ACO Level 1A Umpires' Qualification Course is offered.
A significant portion of the Level 1A course deals with field-craft and man management issues, essential skills for an umpire when officiating in a match. As such it is expected that the prospective student will look to gain good on-field experience of adult league cricket between passing Level 1 and joining the Level 1A course.
The Level 1A qualification requires the successful completion of 3 components:
Attendance at, and participation in, the classroom exercises (to which those just wishing to revise are welcome) and the completion of the course workbook.
Officiating in a substantial number of adult league or cup cricket matches during the season following the classroom course, and an Assessment of the umpire’s ability during one of those games. This is done either by a colleague or boundary assessor.
A Professional Discussion with an ECB ACO Assessor. This will take place at the end of the season during which the above Assessment takes place.
Should any of the above not meet the standard required, the umpire will be deferred until the relevant component(s) have been successfully negotiated.
Umpiring panel matches within the Surrey Championship (1st XI Divisions 1, 2, 3 & 4) currently requires the ECB Level 1A Umpire qualification. (Surrey Championship 1st XI Premier Division requires the ECB Level 2 Umpire qualification.)
