Umpiring Overview Introduction to Umpiring Umpiring Level 1 Umpiring Level 1A Scoring Overview Scoring Level 1 Application Form

Umpiring - Level 1

For individuals wishing to take the first step on the qualification ladder and learning the Laws in more detail, we run the ECB ACO Level 1 Umpire course. It is not necessary to have attended an Introduction to Umpiring course to take Level 1.

Level 1 deals with the fundamentals of umpiring, and covers most of the Laws that pertain to single-day cricket. Some district associations within Surrey run this course over two consecutive weekends; at West Surrey we choose to run it over several evenings, usually sometime between January and March. Whichever approach appeals to you more, the same material is covered.

The course is suitable for anyone, at any age, and assumes no field experience nor prior knowledge of the Laws. The course fee covers copies of all the presentations shown and also includes an edition of "Tom Smith's Cricket Umpiring and Scoring", which contains not only the Laws but diagrammatic and textual examples of their interpretation and administration. The course fee also provides a year's membership of both ECB ACO and West Surrey ACU&S; membership of ECB ACO provides insurance cover for umpires travelling to and officiating at cricket matches.

At the completion of the course, students will be fully equipped for their first season on the field. There is an optional, multiple-choice exam, and those securing a pass become accredited ECB Level 1 Umpires.
